If a UPS is used as the only source of stand-by power, the length of time the load can be supported, in the event of a power failure, is limited by the capacity of the battery and the size of the load. During a prolonged mains interruption, the UPS will support the load for the battery autonomy time and then signal the load to perform an orderly shutdown, assuming that appropriate autoshutdown software is installed. While data will be protected, data processing and communications equipment will no longer be available, with loss of business activity and productivity.
A standby power generator may therefore be an essential requirement for modern critical business where continuity of the power supply is vital.
If the critical power system includes a generator with an ATS (Auto Transfer System), during a mains interruption the UPS will support the load for the time it takes the generator to start, stabilise, and be switched over to supply the UPS. Assuming the generator has been correctly sized for the application, the UPS will accept it as a ‘mains replacement’, and will start to recharge the battery and continue to supply the critical load for the duration of the interruption.
This solution is ideal for customers who need a complete power backup solution. It can be used in:
- Medical & Hospital
- Data center
- Broadcasting
- Industrial process
